Sunny Day Recommendations: Heublein Tower and The Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge

If you’re in the mood for a nice hike (be warned the first third is mostly uphill) Heublein Tower on Talcott Mountain in Simsbury is the perfect activity. The views from the top of the mountain are both breathtaking and thrilling and that is coming from someone who is scared of heights.

Once you reach the top, you’ll get a perfect vantage point to view the rural hills of this part of Connecticut. At the peak, you will encounter the tower itself, equipped with a gift shop, snacks, and bathrooms. However, I would recommend bringing something to eat and drink and practical shoes for the trip (I’ve hiked it in flip flops and although possible, it wasn’t the most comfortable.)

The trek is a short 1.25 miles, perfect for some light activity with friends or family. There is a more difficult trail for experienced hikers as well.

Another attraction if you are more inclined toward sight-seeing or a photo-op is the Old Drake Flower Hill Bridge. Also located in Simsbury at 1 Old Bridge Road, the bridge draws people in, especially during the springtime with its beautiful 19th century metal truss structure covered with flower boxes. The outlook of the river is an additional highlight.

I love to go with my sister when we feel like a night drive. It’s good for a bike ride or picnic since the bridge isn’t meant for cars. It’s even fun to visit in winter if you want a secluded location to play in the snow.
